Identities are often constructed as an external fiction, with the aim of pretending to be something else, more appropriate or acceptable in the circumstances. In the tendency to camouflage and conform, we sometimes find security and reassurance, but at other times this avoidance of the real reveals the absurdity of pretending. The false, in its essence, is perhaps equivalent to the hidden within social normalities.
In the installation, wood–textured laminated surfaces are covered with another imitation of this materiality. The attempt to wash out or enhance the multi–layered paintwork creates muted perceptions. Although these do not necessarily tend to be in the dimensions that are loved and engaging to the majority, polishing the superficial reveals that a false impression can be created. Once we look into the everyday lives of former users, we see in the details of uniform furniture the effects of experience and use.
